May 1st is fast approaching, which means it’s time for Pulp Fiction’s Free Comic Book Day (and Food Drive) 2010! We will have a large assortment of comic books featuring all your favorite characters, including Superman, Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Simpsons, Star Wars, Archie and many more, available absolutely FREE for everyone who visits us on this special day. Plus, get discounted tickets to the Long Beach Comic Con and the Art Theater, meet actors from Street Fighter High, have your picture taken with Superman and Hit-Girl and join in on other fun activities.

What is "Free Comic Book Day?"

Free Comic Book Day is a single day each year when comic book shops across North America and around the world are giving away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. Comic books are an original American art form created in the early twentieth century. They are fun to read and feature a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the reader.

Here are just some of the exciting plans we have for Free Comic Book Day 2010:

The Long Beach Comic Con invades Pulp Fiction

The fine folks from the Long Beach Comic Con will be at Pulp Fiction on Free Comic Book Day with discount tickets to Long Beach Comic Con 2010! They will also be passing out Comic Con merchandising, Twittering the days events and perhaps even have a major Comic Con announcement for us!

Appearing live and in person at Pulp Fiction on Free Comic Book Day:

The cast of Street Fighter High
"They would grow up to be the world’s greatest fighter’s…but first, they had to survive high school."

Cast members from the new You Tube sensation “Street Fighter High” http://www.youtube.com/user/StreetFighterHigh

Hang with Superman and Hit Girl

Superman (Michael Duran) and Hit Girl (of Kick Ass fame) will be here to meet and greet (and take pictures) with all their fans!

Live musical performance by comic book crooner Ian Frazier

Ian Frazier will be giving out CDs and performing his comic book “greatest hits” including Jonah Hex, Xanadu, Sandman and Red Robin. See and hear more of Ian here:

Help the Food Bank and get more FREEBIES

Food Drive letter

It’s time for a Food Drive! Pulp Fiction will be holding a food drive on Saturday, May 1st to help the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. This is a great chance to make a difference in our community. I encourage you to join us in our efforts to help our less fortunate neighbors. The food and funds we raise will help the Foodbank supply food to nearly 900 charitable agency sites that provide food for low-income children, families, senior citizens and individuals in need throughout Los Angeles County.

One in four children in Los Angeles live at or below the poverty line. Of the households served by the Foodbank, 42 percent have one or more adults in the workforce. YET thousands of these families are still forced to choose between paying the rent and buying groceries.

In 2007 alone:
  • 600,000 people, including working poor families, received food through Foodbank programs
  • 5,000 backpacks filled with nutritional food were distributed at four South Los Angeles schools to children who go hungry on weekends when resources, such as school lunch programs, are not available.
  • 8,000 seniors a month received nutritionally-balanced food
  • Over 13,000 volunteers visited the Foodbank in downtown Los Angeles
You help is vitally important.
Here are ways to help:
  • Donate by check or online at our Virtual Food Drive page located at www.lafoodbank.org. With every dollar donated the Foodbank can distribute food for 4 meals.
  • Donate cash, checks and nonperishable food items in the Foodbank barrels located at Pulp Fiction during the drive. Much needed food items include:
    • canned protein such as tuna, sardines, stew, soups
    • peanut butter & Jelly
    • canned fruits & vegetables
    • fruit juices
    • staples such as beans, rice, pasta
    • personal care items including lotion, deodorant, toothpaste
See the Los Angeles Food Bank website for more ways you can contribute!
Thank you for your support.

Bring non-perishable food items or make a donation to the Food Bank and you will get lots more FREE comics, movie passes (courtesy of the Art Theater of Long Beach) and other extra goodies!

From the Foodbank:

"Here at the Foodbank of Southern California, we accept donations in variety. Our most needed items would be non-perishable food items ( mostly canned goods), dried packaged pastas, hygiene products ( such as shampoos, deoderants, soaps), and of course cash, check, and/or money order donations as well."

This just in...

The Art Theater in Long Beach will have a special midnight screening of the cult classic Battle Royale on Saturday, May 2nd - the only way to get your FREE tickets for this awesome event is to make a donation to the Food Bank on Free Comic Book Day at Pulp Fiction!
Here's what Pulp Fiction columnist Ryan Skinner has to say about Battle Royale:

In a dystopian vision of future Japan, 42 high school students are chosen to be part of "The Program," a military operation in which students are forced to participate in a fight to the death. For the uninitiated, Battle Royale is the ultimate gateway movie to the most exuberant and uninhibited cinema Japan has to offer. A meditation on the nature of authority and the decision to comply with it, Kinji Fukasaku's last masterpiece raised the bar for films with real teeth. Employing just the right dose of humor, social satire, extreme violence, and teenage melodrama, Fukasaku takes the coming of age story and drops it into hell.

Live and in-person at Pulp Fiction

Zeb Wells and Todd Nauck
Writer / Artist - Amazing Spiderman #583 (Obama)

Amazing Spider-Man 583

You’ve seen it on the news. You’ve heard about it on the internet. It’s the historical meeting of President Obama and Spider-Man in Amazing Spiderman #583! Now’s your chance to meet the writer and artist of the HOTTEST comic book of the year. Pick up the newest edition and get this RARE piece of memorabilia autographed by the men who created it!

Can’t be here (yes, we know this falls on Valentine’s Day) – pre-order autographed copies of this comic for just $3.99 and pick up at your convenience after the signing!

Q & A with Todd Nauck
by Ryan Riley

Who at Marvel came up with the idea for the Obama cameo in Amazing Spider-Man?
TODD: I'm not sure who exactly. All I know is the Spider-Man editor, Steve Wacker, contacted me to see if I was available to draw a 5-page story.

Describe for us the reaction you had when you found out that you were assigned to do this story.
TODD: When I was first contacted, I didn't even know what it was until the next day. And when I found out, I was a little awestruck. Then when I found out it was running in ASM #583 the week before the inauguration, I realized this was gonna be big.

Did you expect the Obama guest-appearance issue to sell as well as it has?
TODD: I knew it would sell well. I figured people who like Obama, whether they read comics or not, would be going to pick this comic up. I didn’t expect it to go to five printings, though!

What's your take on the other comics that have featured Obama that have been released in the last few months (the Savage Dragon appearances, the bio comics)?
TODD: I didn’t read those. I'm actually behind on a lot of my comic book reading. I ought to check those out!

The first highly anticipated issue is scheduled to debut in February 2006, coinciding with Black History Month.

Dickey's Storm story arc will present an epic romance, revealing the untold love story of the world's two most popular African American Super Heroes, Ororo (also known as Storm of the X-Men) and T'Challa (a.k.a. Marking Dickey's first comic book writing effort, the captivating series blends romance and adventure against the backdrop of Africa's cruel plains.

"This is a truly groundbreaking storyline that will draw in readers from all cultural backgrounds," said Joe Quesada, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics.
