I have been planning to restart an expanded Pulp Notes (for the website) for a little while now, but never quite made the time or found the right subject. Unfortunately, one presented itself over the weekend, as artist Michael Turner passed away last Saturday after a long battle with cancer. You can find the details, along with some heartfelt memorials at Newsarama and Comic Book Resources.

I had the good fortune of covering the Aspen panel at Wizard World LA a couple of years ago for Newsarama. I think there were about ten or twelve Aspen creators at the panel and about five people attending. Even though attendance was sparse, Mike was in great spirits, sharing all of Aspen's grand plans and joking with the (modest) crowd. Afterward, I let him know who I was and he generously squeezed in 15 minutes for me, even though he was due somewhere or other. What struck me right away is how genuine he was and how much he loved what he was doing. I have a pretty good radar for bullshit (years of poker experience should be good for something) and I could tell he was the real deal.

A moment of silence was observed for Michael at the Wizard World Chicago Con over the weekend. I've never been sure what this tradition means (the world stopping for a minute?), other than a show of respect. Having read what I have read about him and having spent a too small amount of time with him, I think he deserves more. One moment of silence just isn't enough, and it doesn't seem quite fitting.

Others have commented on Mike's joy and zest for life and how he shared this with everyone around him. I think a more fitting tribute is to be like Mike. For one day, be like Mike. Take joy in what you have and don't complain about what you don't. Be nicer to those around you. Try harder. Appreciate all the moments. For just one day, be like Mike.
